me and my mates went jumping at pigeons cove on the great orme, its well safe there well when the tides in obviously because theres no under water whirlpools or anything but still everyones all blah blah blah your not doing it but seriously who gives a monkeys ass about it if we like it we’re gonna do it so just face it

As a general guide, I dont jump into water less than the height i am jumping from, I bring a rope with 1m marks on it, throw it in with a weight on the end to check depth, then I get in, swim down and check with my own eyes, I dont want to die. If I jump from 5m, I make sure the water is a absolute min 5m deep, the deeper the water the better. I have tried from harbour walls and found the tide very strong, but depth good. I would never try from a pier, they are almost always too high for the depth of water. I would love to add some practical advice to the guide. If you are open to some?

i am also unsure about water depth, there must be a way of working it out, as the only major variables are the jump height and hydrodynamic drag, as all objects regardless of mass accelerate at the same rate.

Hi Stuart, thanks for the link. I have checked out Pulpit Rock before as Portland Bill was a favourite destination of mine for rock climbing when I was a kid. On the day I got down there though it was too rough and getting back to shore after jumping would have been very tricky.

Knowing this area all my life I feel that Pulpit is really just too hazardous – surging water and rocks proximity. However other spots around the Bill such as Red Crane, given care and good local knowledge, are much safer. I even have a short film of a piggyback jump there c1950!

Unfortunately the tombstoning ‘community’ isn’t very well connected, so this website only really serves the small group of my friends who tombstone on the south coast. But I have approved your comment in the hope that anyone reading these pages who may be more local to you can see it and get in touch and you can speak with them directly.

I’m doing a report for BBC News in the Sunderland area this week. We’re talking about Tombstoning and I’d really like to talk to people who do it and believe it CAN be done safely, so long as you know what you’re doing. Is there anybody from the North East that can talk to us?
