‘I wish I had died’ says man after ‘tombstoning’ into just 36 inches of water
In the media Add commentsMore information regarding one of the incidents on the 11th May has been published.
Mr Andrews, a builder from Plymouth, leapt off cliffs at Sharrow Beach in Whitsand Bay, Cornwall, on Sunday.
He downed six vodkas in a nearby pub to pluck up the courage to jump, then ignored coastguards who saw him on the cliff top and warned him to keep away.
A fast-ebbing tide had reduced the sea to a depth of just 3ft and he landed on sharp rocks, breaking his neck and damaging his spine in front of his horrified girlfriend Katie Hart, 22.
This is a truly terrible outcome for a day that started with people just having fun; and many more people could get injured if they don’t take the risks involved seriously. Trying my best not to sound insensitive, the warnings were there to try and avoid this kind of accident, but they were overlooked.
There are many comments on the article that give a good indication of public reaction to such events.
See the Daily Mail for full details.

Why do people feel the need to put their lives at risk and selfishly not think of their family and friends if something happens to them?
It’s crazy!

survival of the fittest, if he had taken precautions, checked the depth etc, id have nothing but sympathy, but there is a clear line between an accident and an idiot.

We’ve all done things accidentally - or even stupidly - that we later regretted, haven’t we? Just because the outcome in this case was so severe there seems little need to condemn this person so vehemently. Neither is it necessarily crazy to do dangerous things. We don’t all want to swaddle ourselves in cotton wool. I hope he makes the best recovery possible…

What a selfish thing for these people to do! If they are adrenalin junkies just save the vodka money and go to an organised dangerous sport venue. There are lots of options that are controlled and safety concious. At least they may have insurance to take the burden off us tax-payers when it all goes (inevitably) wrong.

So this man did something stupid. I don’t understand the crassness of people who say they have no sympathy for someone who is maimed for life, or, worse, would prefer that person died so as not to burden their pockets. I would rather my tax money went to somebody who showed drunken lack of foresight and has already paid dearly for it, than people who show such a self-righteous lack of compassion while sober.

God forbid you ever make a mistake mary, bill and malcy, you are clearly perfect anyway so i doubt ill have to worry. Hope your avoiding all chemicals(in clothing, furniture, food etc), any food that isnt organic and fresh, smoking, booze and even leaving your house for fear of accidents/ the sun as, being a tax payer i dont want to have to pay for your cancer treatment etc.
idiots

I cannot believe how cruel some people have been with their comments. OK, the man was an idiot, but does he deserve people wishing he had died. He made a mistake and will be reminded of that every day of his life. I am sure his family and friends have paid enough tax money through their life to be paying for his treatment. What he did was thoughtless but the only one who suffered was him. I will save my lack of sympathy for rapists, murderers and paedophiles, the ones who really do deserve their own life to end.
